Kennedy Premiere in August
A new work by Vincent Kennedy has its premiere in Dublin on 11 August. Dublin - Overture to my City, an RTÉ commission, will be performed in a lunchtime concert at the National Concert Hall by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra under conductor Davd Brophy. Writing about the work, the composer said: 'I have been looking for the opportunity to write music about Dublin, the city in which I was born and live, for some time. When RTÉ commissioned me to write music for a concert in which the theme would predominantly be flight, I immediately thought of a way I could marry my desire to write about Dublin and associate it with that theme. I chose the word "my", in the title of the piece because a city means different things to different people. My view of the city, my experiences are unique to me on the whole and it is my view or more precisely part of my view of Dublin that I have set about to capture in the music.' Highlights from the concert, which is presented by Evelyn Cockburn, will be broadcast on Wednesday 12 August within RTÉ lyric fm's In Tempo programme (Mon-Fri, 9.00-11.00am) The concert is repeated on 15 August 2009 at 2.00pm in St Canice's Cathedral as part of the Kilkenny Arts Festival.
