Magee Gets Sweet Taste of Juice

juice

All-female vocal trio juice is ensemble-in-residence at the University of Ulster's Magee campus this year.

The juice eclectic repertoire draws on world music, jazz, folk and pop and often combines live singing with theatre, electronics and/or visuals. At the forefront of the contemporary music scene, the trio has commissioned numerous new works and performed at the British Film Institute, the Royal Academy of Art, the Purcell Room, Wigmore Hall and Tampere Vocal Music Festival, Finland.

Since first visiting the campus in November, the group has had a busy time taking part in BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour, Radio 3's The Choir and a performance at London's Wigmore Hall earlier this month.

Attached to the School of Creative Arts, they return to the University at the end of April to present a packed programme of performances, workshops and outreach, including a number of events open to the general public.

The three singers perform a lunchtime concert in the Great Hall, Magee campus, Derry at 1.15pm on Tuesday 28 April. The programme includes works written especially for it by University of Ulster student composers as well as the premiere of a new work by versatile Ulster lecturer-composer Laurence Roman.

On Wednesday 29 at 8.00pm the trio moves to the recently reopened Derry Playhouse for an evening of eclectic vocal music crossing a broad range of musical styles, with a little help from some of Magee's own singers and the University's in-house interdisciplinary arts collective, DEME. Tickets for both concerts can be booked through the University's Cultural Development Office, tel: 00448-28-7137 5456.

The juice members are experienced educators in community, school and university settings and they will stage a public workshop to coincide with Cultural Diversity Week, presenting fun and innovative ways to use singing in the classroom and in community settings. This workshop will be at 2.30pm on Thursday 30 April in The Playhouse.

Adam Melvin, Lecturer in Popular Music at the University of Ulster, said, 'Having juice over in the autumn was without doubt, one of the highlights of what has been a busy year music-wise for us here at Magee. I know those of us who were lucky enough to catch their gigs at the Great Hall and Sandino's were blown away by their performances. I'm absolutely thrilled to be welcoming Kerry, Sarah and Anna back to the University of Ulster, and judging by what they have planned, this visit promises to be even better than the last.'
