Film-scoring Workshop for Emerging Composers
The Contemporary Music Centre is co-organising a film-scoring workshop for emerging composers and film directors. The workshop, which is organised jointly by the Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO), Filmbase, FÁS Screen Training Ireland and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, is designed to give composers and film directors the opportunity to work collaboratively on producing a short film. Following an open call for submissions in September 2008 which resulted in over 60 applications, composers Louise Heaney, David Stalling, Jonathan Casey and Michael Fleming were selected to take part in the project. Short films from directors Jason Butler, Jaki Irvine, Ged Murphy and Claire Dix were chosen from the submissions received from filmmakers. After a meeting with all the participants in early January, each composer has been working with one of the directors to compose music to go with their short film. The experienced film composer and arranger, Fiachra Trench, is acting as mentor and advisor to the composers and filmmakers, and has been on hand to offer any advice to the composers as they work together on the project. The project culminates in a one-day recording session in RTE studios on 30 March 2009 and will involve the RTÉ Concert Orchestra performing and recording the original scores for each short film.
