Concorde Present New Works by Judith Ring and Stephen Gardner
Concorde premiere new works by Irish composers at the National Gallery on 7 June. The works, both commissioned by the ensemble, include a duo for clarinet and violin by Stephen Gardner, and a sextet with tape by York-based composer Judith Ring. Gardner's work, klezmeria, pays tribute to Concorde's clarinetist Paul Roe summer of 2008 when he spent three months in the US studying klezmer music. Judith Ring met with each member of Concorde to explore their instruments and record sounds, and used these samples to inspire her composition, Within an Egg of Space. These two new works will be performed along with a recent commission from Mexican composer Alejandro Castanos, Angulos, a lively and entertaining sextet which was premiered in January of this year. The programme also features a second work by Judith Ring, Whispering the Turmoil Down, for bass clarinet and tape, which was premiered by Concorde in 2007, and an earlier work, Duell, by Swedish composer Torbjorn Lundquist for accordion and percussion, performed by Dermot Dunne and Roberto Oliveira. The concert takes place on Sunday, 7 June at 3 pm in the Shaw Room of the National Gallery and admission is free. Concorde is supported by the Arts Council. Posted: 26 May 2009
