Concorde at the National Gallery
Concorde presents music by six composers at the National Gallery on 18 October. Under the title, 1-2-3: Solos, Duos, Trios, their programme presents music written between 1995 and 2009. Five composers will be present at the concert to introduce their work and meet the audience. American composer Wayne Siegel’s Jackdaw for bass clarinet and tape began life with recordings of the composer’s pet bird. Ed Bennett’s Restricted Viewing for piano (with ebow) and tape was written for British pianist Sarah Nicolls. Deirdre McKay’s hauntingly beautiful duo for cello and bass clarinet, between was commissioned by Concorde to celebrate the centenary of Samuel Beckett in 2006 and its title is taken from a line of Beckett’s poetry.
Alyson Barber, a graduate of DIT Conservatory of Music & Drama ,has recently completed a Masters at the Royal Academy of Music, London. Her setting of Bóithre Bána by Eoghan O Tuairisc for voice and cello will be given its Irish premiere along with a first performance of twists and turns in a version for solo cello. Emma O’Halloran has just completed a Masters at NUI Maynooth and was inspired by the words of French poet Verlaine for the title of her instrumental trio, a chosen landscape. Japanese composer Fumiko Miyachi has written two songs for voice, clarinet and piano based on Shakespeare Sonnets The performers are Jane O’Leary (piano), Tine Verbeke (soprano), Paul Roe (clarinet) and David James (cello) and the concert takes place in the National Gallery of Ireland on Sunday, 18 October 2009 at 3.00 pm. Admission is free. Concorde’s next performance will be at the Dublin City Gallery: the Hugh Lane on Sunday November 22 at 12 Noon when they premiere a work by Hugh Boyle which was awarded the IMRO composition prize at the 2008 Feis Ceoil.
