CMC Concerts in London
The Contemporary Music Centre presents two concerts of Irish works in London in October and November 2009. The concerts offer a two-part look at contemporary music for violin and piano and are part of CMC's new music::new Ireland international programme. The first of these linked but contrasting performances took place on 12 October, when Darragh Morgan (violin) and Mary Dullea (piano), who are among the leading champions of Irish new music, played a cutting-edge programme of works by Gerald Barry, Frank Corcoran, Raymond Deane, Benjamin Dwyer, Andrew Hamilton, John McLachlan and Jennifer Walshe. In the second programme, on 16 November, Ioana Petcu-Colan and Michael McHale explore the more lyrical side of the repertoire. Taking as a starting point the individual sound-worlds of the violin and the piano, their recital points up themes of contrast and complement in works by Ronan Guilfoyle, Philip Hammond, Philip Martin and Ian Wilson.
The concerts take place in the new Kings Place venue, a creative centre within five minutes walk of King's Cross-St Pancras station, which has two new concert halls and presents music, paintings and sculpture from around the world in an attractive setting on the waterfront of Regent's Canal. They form part of Kings Place's 'Out Hear' series which is curated by leading promoters and musicians in the worlds of contemporary/experimental music and multimedia performance with the aim "prepare to break your sound barrier". new music::new Ireland is an international programme of the Contemporary Music Centre and comprises a series of musical events and initiatives designed to showcase the work of Irish composers and performers on the international stage. It is supported by funding from Culture Ireland, as well as CMC's main revenue funder, the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon. The concerts take place in Kings Place, 90 York Way, London N1 9AG, on Monday, 12 October and 16 November at 8pm. For details of the programme, please see our Calendar.
