University of Ulster Composition Symposium A day-long event will examine the current conditions for composers and composing in Ireland. The University of Ulster is to host a Composition Symposium at its Derry-based Magee Campus on Wednesday 3 December. Composers Brian Irvine, Laurence Roman and Ian Wilson will launch the programme with a session examining opera provision in the north of Ireland in the context of their own works in development, and in advance of an Arts Council of Northern Ireland review of funding for the art form. Ed Bennett and Frank Lyons (whose latest CD, Rush, will receive its official launch during the day) will also lead a discussion on current opportunities for composers 'ranging from commissions, grants and residencies to the support offered by organisations such as the Contemporary Music Centre and the Association of Irish Composers'.
Pianists Mary Dullea and Atsushi Tamura will also give a short concert of works by composers -- including Adam Melvin, Ed Bennett, Neil Burns, Frank Lyons, Laurence Roman and Ian Wilson -- presently or previously associated with the institution.
