Smith Quartet Irish Tour The Smith Quartet performs works by a number of Irish composers in an Irish tour from 9-16 April. The concerts take place as part of a Music Network national tour that will bring the British-based quartet to various locations around Ireland. The tour, entitled Hunting Gathering, also features Derry-born saxophonist Gerard McChrystal.
The Smith Quartet will premiere a new work by Donnacha Dennehy, Stamp (to avoid erotic thoughts), which was commissioned specially for the quartet and funded under the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon's Commissions Award scheme. The performances also feature Ciaran Farrell's The Pilgrim's Return, which had its premiere at Wigmore Hall in London in September 2007. The Pilgrim's Return can be heard on Farrell's latest CD, Perfect State, which was released last year on the RTÉ lyric fm label. As well as these pieces, the quartet and McChrystal perform works by Irish composers Kevin Volans, Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin and Greg Caffrey, along with music by Michael Nyman, Chick Corea, Debussy and Ravel. The tour runs from 9-16 April and will visit Tipperary, Cork, Navan, Bray, Moate, Dublin, Belfast, Omagh, Downpatrick and Portstewart.
