Italian Concerts for Karen Power

Karen Power
Karen Power

A new work for trumpet and tape by Karen Power is to receive its first performance in Italy in May.

Written for Canadian trumpeter Amy Horvey specifically for the five-concert tour, ducks and chickens explores gestural interaction between live instrument (E flat trumpet) and pre-recorded tape. The electronic element, says Power, 'is made up of a series of long and intense layering of sonorities that appear to be stationary but within which there are hints of movement. The role of the trumpet is to bring out some of these inner movements and exaggerate them'.

Devised by trumpeter and pedagogue Ed Carroll, the concert series begins on Monday 12 May at the Istituto Musicale Gaetano Donizetti, Bergamo and includes dates at the Conservatorio Guido Cantelli, Novara (13 May) and Conservito di Milano, Milan (15 May) before concluding at the Libreria Della Donne, Biella (16 and 17 May).

ducks and chickens will be heard in a programme that also features music by Scelsi, Takemitsu, Gruber, Stanley Friedman, Ryan Purchase and Cecilia Arditto.
