Hilltown New Music Festival

A one-day new music festival takes place in Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath on 20 July.

Experiment 20 - New Music Festival showcases new music from a variety of different genres and styles, including performances for acoustic instruments and electronic installations. This year's event includes composers Henry Vega and Diana Roteru, violinist Barbara Lüneburg, and flautist Ana Chifu.

Composer Gráinne Mulvey has written a new work for flute and tape to be premiered at the festival by herself and flautist Joe O'Farrell. "Occasionally the sounds merge to form a timbre, which makes it difficult to distinguish whether it's the tape part or the performer," says Mulvey. "The tape part can be played on its own or with performer, and the performer can enter the musical discourse at any stage without disturbing the continuity."

Also involved are audiovisual collaborators David Stalling and Anthony Kelly, who will be showing an installation at the festival. The installation is an audiovisual response to the space and the duo will also be doing live improvisation. "It looks like a really good project and we're delighted to be part of the festival," says artist Anthony Kelly.

A number of audiovisual works by Irish composers drawn from CMC's library will also be shown throughout the day including Grounded, by Karen Power, Light Body Corpuscles, by Gordon Delap, and Passades by Roger Doyle, among others. These will be presented continuously so that visitors to the festival can create their own timetable of performances they would like to see.

Experiment 20 - New Music Festival takes place in Hilltown Studio Theatre, Hilltown, Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath on Sunday, 20 July 2008 from 2pm to 8pm. Tickets are €15 each and are available at the gate. For more information contact Fionnuala Cawkhill, email fionnualaco@eircom.net.
