Ronan Guilfoyle Premiere Features in October Concerts
Two works by Ronan Guilfoyle, one a world premiere, will be heard in concerts in Paris and Dublin during October. Based on material drawn from early-morning birdsong recorded at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Annaghmakerrig, County Monaghan, Artists in Residence will be performed by pianist Izumi Kimura (for whom the work was written) and saxophonist Stéphane Payen at the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris at 8pm on Wednesday 15 October. Kimura will also give the world premiere performance of Dance Suite No. 1 during a solo lunchtime recital at the National Concert Hall, Dublin beginning at 1.05pm on Friday 31 October. Prompted by the use of dance music in baroque compositions, each of the Suite's three movements separately employ what the composer describes as "classic bass lines from Seventies' funk music; a highly altered version of a typical tango rhythm; and the triple rhythms of the jig (with perhaps too many foreign elements for even the most liberal of Trad tastes)". The programme also includes the world premiere of Greg Caffrey's Le Petit Nicholas/Firefly Catching and the Irish premiere of selected pieces from Toshinao Sato's Light Coloured Album as well as excerpts from Takashi Yoshimatsu's Pleiades Dances.
