First Performance for New Work by Linda Buckley
The Rothko String Trio is to premiere a newly commissioned work by Linda Buckley in Dublin. Inspired by the Norwegian Hardanger fiddle, fiol takes its title from the popular colloquialism for 'fiddle' in 17th and 18th century Danish/Norwegian. Similar in construction to a violin, the Hardanger fiddle is played like a viola d'amore with only four of its eight or nine strings directly bowed and the remaining strings left to resonate 'sympathetically'. Buckley says she approached the writing of fiol by thinking of the Rothko String Trio 'as a single, 12-stringed “meta-instrument”, almost like a Hardanger fiddle or baroque viola d'amore with sympathetic resonating strings'. The work, which will be accompanied by string trios by Schubert and Beethoven, can be heard at the Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin at noon on Sunday 4 May.
