London Premiere for Award-Winning Work by Ed Bennett
The BBC Symphony Orchestra performs Ed Bennett’s Ausland in London on 1 February. Winner of the First Prize in the Tactus Composers Forum in Brussels, Ausland, says the composer, takes its inspiration from the work of the painters Bridget Riley, Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning with its title translating from German as ‘abroad’ or, in particular contexts, ‘foreign’. It groups together ‘high, middle and low sonorities rather than instruments grouped in their usual families with many independent moving lines to hopefully create a constant sense of movement within a much larger homogenous soundworld’. Ausland will be performed in a free concert given by the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Ryan Wigglesworth at the BBC Maida Vale Studios, Delaware Road, London W9 at 7.30pm. It will be recorded for later broadcast in BBC Radio 3’s Hear and Now programme. For details see our calendar or to book free tickets call + 44 0870 901 1227 or email radio.ticket.unit@bbc.co.uk.
