Tilt
A debut play by composer Ailís Ní Ríain will be premiered in Liverpool this April. Tilt is a physical piece of voice-theatre for three voices written specifically in the Cork dialect. It explores the memories of three siblings who constantly repeat and recall their childhood memories, in turns sardonic, sarcastic, tragic and haunting. This is the first play by Ailís Ní Ríain, and does not include any musical score. She says of the play: ‘I have been working on the script for two years and see it as a through-composed voice piece; tightly constructed as a type of ‘round’ for three voices. While it does contain a narrative my primary concerns as a composer/writer was to communicate a story with a particularly stylized, highly rhythmic, colourful yet controlled vocal quality.’ Tilt is premiered by the Liverpool theatre company, The New Works (formerly LLT), in the Open Eye Hall, Liverpool, before touring to the Granary Theatre, Cork and the Citizen’s Theatre, Glasgow. Published by Nick Hern Books in April 2007, the play is directed by Graeme Maley, with Irish actors Hannah Burke, Aidan O'Hare and Rachel O'Shea. The New Works Theatre Company is the only pure New Writing Theatre Company in Liverpool and the North West; it is their aim to bring the very best of new writing to the North West and to take the very best of North West new writing to the regions and across the UK's borders. The play runs from 17-21 April in the Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool, and from 24-28 April in The Granary, Cork. Posted: 20 April 2007
