Ní Dhubhghaill Premiere in May

Caitríona Ní Dhubhghaill's Sanctus receives its premiere this May.

The Mornington Singers will perform a new piece by Caitríona Ní Dhubhghaill, Sanctus/Is Naofa Thú, as part of their tenth anniversary concert this May. Caitríona has worked closely with the Mornington Singers over the past number of years, and ran a workshop for the choir in April focusing on the performance of her choral works in the Irish language.

The Sanctus is the third movement in a four-movement cycle of unaccompanied choral settings of the Mass Ordinary texts in Irish. It was commissioned by the Mornington Singers, with funds from Cáirde Cheangal Dhá Chultúr, for performance in their Canadian tour later this year. The first two movements of the cycle, Kyrie/A Thiarna déan trócaire and Gloria/Glóir, were commissioned in 2006 by RTÉ and were recorded by the National Chamber Choir in April 2006, under the direction of Orla Flanagan.

The concert in May includes performances of An raibh tú ar an gCarraig and Caintic Mhuire, as well as music by Purcell/Eriksson, Purcell/Sandstrom, Rautavaara, Alcaraz, Samuel Barber and Eric Whitacre.

Orla Flanagan has conducted The Mornington Singers since 2002. Under her direction, the choir was awarded First Prize and a distinction at both the 2004 and 2005 Cork International Choral Festivals, and in both years the choir was also awarded the Trofaí Cuimhneacháin Philip Uí Laoighaire for their performances of music by Caitríona Ní Dhubhghaill. In 2006, Orla gained the International Jury Award to a conductor at the Fleischmann International Trophy Competition at the Cork International Choral Festival, and this year she was invited to adjudicate at the festival.

The concert takes place on Saturday 19 May in St Mary's Pro-Cathedral, Dublin. See Calendar for details.
