Music Funding Research Research Fellow Ailbhe Kenny is currently researching local authorities' contribution to music development in Ireland. Despite the relatively recent establishment of arts offices in local government (less than 20 years), the innovative small and large-scale musical initiatives put in place have had a significant impact on the arts in local communities. Few people beyond those directly involved are aware of the important and influential work that is going on and there is currently no national overview or national awareness of this work. This research is being carried out in order to profile Local Authorities as critical partners in music development in Ireland. This nationwide overview hopes to aid further musical directions in defining the vital role Local Authorities have to play in the development of music, informing decisions about musical activities, as well as influencing the place of music within Local Authorities’ arts policies. It will also enable Local Authorities to learn from the experiences of music projects, exchange information, share expertise and so sustain development of music in local areas while also raising artistic standards. By documenting the achievements of Local Authorities it is hoped that they will feel empowered to continue with future music developments with the support of a researched knowledge base to underpin their decisions. This research is carried out by under the direction of Dr. Patricia Flynn of the Music Department, St. Patrick’s College with support from The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon, St. Patrick’s College, Sligo County Council and Wexford County Council.
