Critical Success for Michael McGlynn
Michael Glynn has been widely applauded for his contribution to And on Earth Peace: A Chanticleer Mass. The San Francisco-based all-male a cappella ensemble Chanticleer commissioned Michael McGlynn and four other contemporary composers from different musical and cultural backgrounds to each write a section of the Mass for a multi-faith 21st Century audience. McGlynn’s contribution, A Uain De, a setting of the Agnus Dei, is a lilting mix of medieval and traditional Celtic music and has been identified as one of the recording’s stand-out tracks. Typical of the acclaim was The Wall Street Journal’s observation that the work ‘exploits the haunting quality of a droning bass line, over which [McGlynn] has fashioned a chantlike melody tinged with the poignant inflection of Irish folk song. With its gentle backdrop of sustained harmonies, A Uain De offers a truly peaceful conclusion to a work that embraces many different aspects of faith’. And on Earth Peace: A Chanticleer Mass is released on the Warner Classics label. Posted: 23 June 2007
