Roger Doyle Wins Magisterium Award
Roger Doyle has won the prestigious Magisterium Award at the Bourges International Electro-acoustic Music Competition in France. The award, which is one of the largest prizes in the world for electronic music, is open to composers having at least 25 years of professional experience in the field, and its objective is 'the promotion and diffusion of works that might become milestones in the history of electroacoustic music'. Roger Doyle is a member of Aosdana and has worked extensively in theatre, film and dance. He was seen recently on stage at the Gate theatre's revival of Oscar Wilde's Salome for which he wrote and performed the music. Babel, his magnum opus, was released on a 5-CD set in 1999 and last year the Dublin Electronic Arts Festival released a retrospective double CD of his 1980s work with Operating Theatre, the music-theatre company he co-founded with actress Olwen Fouere. Of his prize-winning work The Ninth Set Doyle says: 'To me the music has a supernatural feeling to it, but I have kept the title neutral, so that you can imagine what it is yourselves'.
