CMC's 'Art of Sound' Exhibition at the Kilkenny Arts Festival 2007

The Contemporary Music Centre presents The Art of Sound, a photographic and multi-media exhibition, at the Kilkenny Arts Festival this August.

The exhibition offers a glimpse into the creativity of a selection of Irish composers and features Irish photographer Eugene Langan’s dramatic and perceptive photographs of Irish composers and their music, alongside original manuscripts and graphic scores. An audio-guide narrated by Eamon Lawlor of RTÉ Lyric fm brings to life the personalities of the composers and the music on display, leading to a truly unique and rich experience for the visitor.

The Art of Sound was originally devised by the Contemporary Music Centre in partnership with the Music Department of University College Cork, and funded by Cork 2005: European Capital of Culture with support from the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon; the Music Department of University College Cork; Pro Helvetia, Arts Council of Switzerland; the Swiss Embassy and Cork Public Museum.

The exhibition will be on view from Saturday, 11 August to Sunday, 19 August at Rothe House, Parliament Street, Kilkenny, and will be officially opened by violinist and Classical Music Curator of the Kilkenny Arts Festival, Catherine Leonard at 5.00pm on Saturday, 11 August 2007.

As part of the exhibition, Jennifer Walshe, one of the composers featured, will give a lunchtime concert in Rothe House on Friday, 17 August at 2.15pm. She will perform two of her own works as well as music by Kurt Schwitters, Ukeoirn O’Connor and Cathy Berberian. These pieces will demonstrate the different methods of notation used by composers including graphic scores, comic books and memory aids.

Opening hours for the exhibition will be Monday to Saturday, 10.30am – 5.00pm, and Sunday, 12.00pm – 5.00pm. Admission is free. Please note: As Rothe House is a historical building, access for wheelchairs and pushchairs is restricted.
