Ian Wilson in Los Angeles
Composer Ian Wilson has been commissioned to write three works for the Los Angeles-based Camerata Pacifica. Established 18 years ago by Adrian Spence, a flautist from Northern Ireland, Camerata Pacifica is now the largest chamber music ensemble in Southern California and has programmed several works by Ian Wilson already. The first work to be premiered, in May 2007, will be a Concerto for Violin and Chamber Ensemble commissioned by Richard & Luci Janssen. Violinist Catherine Leonard from Cork will be the soloist, completing the trio of Irish involvement. Leonard has recently been appointed a principal violinist for Camerata Pacifica and is an advocate of contemporary Irish composers. Two further works will be written by Wilson to be premiered in the Los Angeles area over the next three seasons: a work for flute and piano, and a work based on one of the Glanmore Sonnets by Seamus Heaney for voice, flute, violin, horn and piano. The project is supported by Tourism Ireland. Spence spoke of his excitement about the project: ‘There is a real appetite for talented Irish musicians in California and I hope this is the beginning of a strong relationship between the American-based Camerata Pacifica and the Irish arts community. Ian is one of the most compelling voices in classical music today and Catherine has been hailed as the “leading Irish violinist of her generation” by the Irish Times. The fact they both come from my home country makes me very proud.’ Ian Wilson said, ‘I am delighted to be continuing my association with Camerata Pacifica in such a concrete way. The commitment, enthusiasm, and of course, musicianship of its players are all extremely impressive, and it is very exciting to be able to work closely with them in the creation of new work.’ Posted: 31 August 2006
