Gibson Prize at AXA Dublin International Piano Competition
John Gibson’s work received a prize at the recent AXA Dublin International Piano Competition. Third prizewinner Roberto Plano from Italy was awarded the RTÉ Lyric FM Prize for the best performance of one of the three commissioned Irish works. Plano, who played Gibson's Moladh go deo le Dia, also received the AXA Prize for the best semi-final recital other than the first prizewinner's. The competition was won by Romain Descharmes (26) of France, whose choice of Irish piece was Elaine Agnew’s Seagull. Korean pianist Kyu Yeon Kim (20), who also chose Agnew’s Seagull, was the second prizewinner. She won the NSO Prize for the best concerto performance other than the first prizewinner's and the Bridget Doolan Prize for Mozart. New works were also commissioned from composers Rhona Clarke (Tread Softly) and John McLachlan (Grand Action). All four works are available from the Contemporary Music Centre as its Piano Album V.
