Field Day Music: Fleischmann and Deane
The first two books in the Field Day Music series have been published. Edited by Séamas de Barra and Patrick Zuk, the series provides biographies of composers with examples of their music as well as full composition catalogues and lists of performances. The first in the series gives an account of Aloys Fleischmann’s career as a composer, conductor, teacher and musicologist, situating his work in wider social and intellectual contexts, and paying particular attention to his lifelong engagement with Gaelic culture and his attempts to forge a distinctively Irish music. The second volume in the series looks at the career and creative achievement of Raymond Deane. It is the first comprehensive study of an Irish composer to appear in print in his lifetime. Other composers in the series will include Seóirse Bodley, Michele Esposito, and Ina Boyle. The books already in print are available in all good bookstores and online, retailing at Posted: 1 December 2006
