Fennessy at Gaudeamus 2006
A work by David Fennessy will be performed at the International Gaudeamus Music Week in Amsterdam on 6 September. Each year the Gaudeamus Music Week presents a carefully selected cross section of recent developments from the 'global village' of contemporary music. The Music Week is also a competition for young composers. This year, the jury comprised of Calliope Tsoupaki (the Netherlands), Sam Hayden (England) en Jürgen Bräuninger (South Africa), nominated 20 works for the Gaudeamus Prize. Among them was David Fennessy's Confetti Medley (2005) for four bass clarinets and two hand-cranked music box mechanisms. It will be performed on Wednesday, 6 September in Amsterdam's Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ by the Ensemble of the Conservatory of Amsterdam, conducted by the distinguished Dutch bass clarinettist, Harry Sparnaay. The International Gaudeamus Music Week primarily focuses on composers under 30, and is a unique international event for the introduction of new music by talented young composers.
