Arts Collaboration in Waterford
Composer Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin is involved in a project in the Waterford Gaeltacht. A collaboration by four Irish artists will culminate in an evening of music, song, poetry and dance to coincide with the unveiling of a piece of public art at Meánscoil San Nioclás, An Rinn, Co. Waterford. Entitled Duan Déiseach, it brings together the work of Irish composer and performer Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin, contemporary dancer Fearghus Ó Conchúir, sean-nós singer Áine Uí Cheallaigh and poet Áine Uí Fhoghlú. A waterfall containing three handcrafted Waterford Crystal salmon is being built under the supervision of local artist Róisín Ní Chionnfhaolaidh in the green space outside Meánscoil San Nioclás in Ring. Local poet Áine Uí Fhoghlú has written a long three-part poem on the theme of the waterfall, and Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin has set the piece to music. Áine Uí Cheallaigh will sing the work, accompanied by the composer, and Fearghus Ó Conchúir will perform his specially composed contemporary dance along with students with whom he has been conducting workshops in recent months. The illumination of the waterfall will be marked by a fire sculpture built by Waterford’s street-theatre group Spraoi. The building of the waterfall has been a collaborative effort between parents and friends of the school, co-ordinated by local craftsman Éanna Ó Muirithe with material costs sponsored by Roinn na Gaeltachta. The multi media performance is sponsored primarily by Ealaíon na Gaeltachta and The Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon with assistance from Waterford County Council. The event takes place at Meánscoil San Nioclás, An Rinn, Co. Waterford on Thursday 4 May 2006. See Calendar for details. Posted: 29 April 2006
