The Contemporary Music Centre has received funding from The Heritage Council and Dublin City Council recently.

          

These grants are particularly welcome in CMC’s 20th anniversary year. The Heritage Council award of 4,500 is to enable the Centre to transfer an important sub-collection of sound recordings from older formats such as quarter-inch reel and cassette onto CD and computer hard drive.

The recordings are of works that are not otherwise available and digitising them will not only ensure preservation, but make them accessible to users of the Centre. The work will be carried out in-house by a part-time sound technician.

Dublin City Council’s grant of 4,000 through the Arts Office is to fund an exciting collaborative project in June. Three outdoor sound installations will be commissioned by CMC for the Old City area of Temple Bar immediately adjacent to the Centre. Two will be situated in Cow’s Lane and East Essex Street respectively, with the third in CMC’s own rear courtyard.

The installations, which will be commissioned from Irish composers, will have a theme related to the history of this very old part of the city. They will be set up for the month of June 2006 in conjunction with The Ark’s season on sound installations and sculptures.

CMC also intends to run a seminar during June on working with sound sculptures and installations, with contributions from some of those most active in this area of music-making.
