Christ Church Choir on Tour

Caitríona Ní Dhubhghaill
Caitríona Ní Dhubhghaill

The choir of Christ Church Cathedral will bring the music of Caitríona Ní Dhubhghaill to the United States in February.

Caitríona Ní Dhubhghaill’s Cainticí Mhuire agus Shimeoin (2000) are the first polyphonic Irish-language settings of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis, the canticles traditionally sung at the service of evensong in the Anglican tradition.

Since the award of best Irish-language entry in the RTÉ Church Music Competition in 2001, Ní Dhubhghaill’s Cainticí have passed into the repertoire of a number of prestigious Dublin-based choirs, including the Mornington Singers and the choir of Christ Church Cathedral. They have been performed both liturgically and in concerts, at the Cork International Choral festival (where the performance was awarded the Pilib Ó Laoghaire trophy) and on international tours in Italy, Croatia and Slovenia (the Ljubljana performance in 2002 was broadcast live on Slovenian national radio).

The Cainticí will receive their first American performance this February as part of the tour of Christ Church Cathedral, directed by the cathedral’s Master of Music, Judy Martin.

These performances will be part of the evensong services at St Thomas’ Church, Fifth Avenue, New York City, and Washington National Cathedral. There will be liturgical performances on January 19, 22 and 29 at services in Christ Church Cathedral. See Calendar for further details.
