Samuel Beckett and Music
Irish works composed in response to the writings of Samuel Beckett will be performed again this September. In conjunction with the exhibition, Samuel Beckett: A Passion for Paintings, at the National Gallery of Ireland, contemporary ensemble Concorde will perform a special programme of Beckett-inspired pieces. This special exhibition traces the development of Beckett's interest in the visual arts from its origins in the National Gallery through his admiration for the work of Jack B. Yeats, to his associations with contemporary artists. The unusual juxtaposition of music, art and words will take place within the exhibition space and will feature commissioned music by Irish composers Frank Corcoran, Ed Bennett, Deirdre McKay, Scott McLaughlin and Jane O'Leary. Premiered earlier this year during the Beckett Centenary Festival, the music challenges listeners to consider the work of Beckett through the medium of sound. The pieces were commissioned by Concorde with the support of the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism through the Beckett Centenary Festival Committee. The concert takes place in the Millennium Wing of the National Gallery of Ireland on Sunday 3 September. The exhibition runs until Sunday 17 September. See Calendar for details.
