Welsh Opera in Waterford

A Chair in Love poster

A new opera by Welsh composer John Metcalf receives a performance in Waterford this month.

The contemporary comic opera, A Chair in Love, will be presented by Garter Lane Arts Centre, Artswave and Waterford New Music Week. Metcalf was composer in residence at the 2005 Waterford New Music Week earlier this year, at which some of his chamber music was performed, hence the Waterford connection.

A Chair in Love is an international collaboration developed under the umbrella of the three year Joint Agreement on Cultural Co-operation between the Governments of Quebec and the United Kingdom with the support of The Canada Council for the Arts, Cardiff 2008, Wales Arts International and Le Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.

The premiere took place on Thursday 20 October at Swansea's Taliesin Arts Centre in collaboration with the Swansea Festival. The production is now touring to other venues in Britain with just one performance in Ireland before being presented in Montréal in the spring of 2006.

The Irish premiere takes place on Tuesday 1 November at the Theatre Royal, Waterford. Further information is available on the opera’s web site.
