The seventh Waterford New Music Week takes place in February. The composer-in-residence this year is Ronan Guilfoyle, the Irish jazz composer and performer. Microclimate, his new ensemble, will work with the composition students in Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) on a new improvised commission. Microclimate will also perform a set of works entitled There’s a word for it at the closing concert on Thursday 9 February. Beatrix Hermann (organ) and Timo Reikowski (cello), both from Germany, feature in the opening evening concert on Monday 6 February. The programme includes contemporary European composers as well as a work by composer and head of WIT’s music department, Eric Sweeney. Hermann and Reikowski will also present a pre-concert lecture/masterclass on Monday afternoon prior to the concert. Local contemporary musicians are also involved. Clarinettist Stephen Mackey will perform a number of contemporary pieces at the opening concert. Dylan Bible and his jazz ensemble, Josimar, will feature on Tuesday 7 February at a lunchtime recital in The Book Centre. Other lunchtime events include a schools project with composers Sue Furlong and Cathy Purcell and a concert of original compositions by students of the WIT Music Degree course.
