Operating Theatre at Galway Arts Festival
Roger Doyle’s Operating Theatre company is staging a new performance in the Galway Arts Festival. Here Lies is the first in a series of live installations by Operating Theatre which retraces a journey through Ireland by the French actor/writer Antonin Artaud in 1937. Inspired by an apocalyptic vision, he arrived in Ireland carrying a cane, which he believed to be the staff of St Patrick. His journey brought him to Inis Mór and to Galway, where he stayed in the Imperial Hotel without the means to pay his bill. Some days later he was arrested in Dublin and subsequently deported as an undesirable and destitute alien. Created by the company in collaboration with director Selina Cartmell and designer Paul Keogan with sound design by Roger Doyle, Here Lies is performed by actor Olwen Fouéré and is an ongoing performance with the audience free to come and go. Friday 22, Saturday 23 & Sunday 24 July, 6.00 pm to 9.00 pm. Meeting Room, Imperial Hotel, Eyre Square, Galway. Admission free. Posted: 15 July 2005
