‘In Ireland’ in Belfast In Ireland is the theme of this summer’s annual season of invitation concerts with the Ulster Orchestra. Running from Friday July 29 to Friday 2 September, this BBC Northern Ireland/BBC Radio 3 series celebrates Irish composers from the 1890s to 2005. The series takes its title from Hamilton Harty’s orchestral fantasy, In Ireland, which opens the season. Each programme is both contemporary and retrospective and includes composers from Ireland both North and South. The series ranges from late nineteenth century works by Stanford and Herbert to Radio 3 commissions from Donnacha Dennehy (joint commission with the RTÉ National Chamber Choir) and Philip Hammond. In between are works from the early to mid 20th century by Harty, Moeran, May, Ó Riada, Trimble and Boydell and pieces by contemporary composers David Byers, John Kinsella, Gerald Barry, Stephen Gardner, Deirdre Gribbin, Elaine Agnew, Eric Sweeney and Ian Wilson, many not previously performed in Northern Ireland. Admission for all these concerts is by complimentary ticket. Tickets and further information are available from: For programme details please visit the Calendar. Posted: 15 July 2005
