Dwyer in the Green
A new work by Benjamin Dwyer will be performed outdoors in Dublin’s St Stephen’s Green in celebration of the 125th anniversary of the gardens. As part of a week of celebrations marking the gift of the land by Lord Ardilaun to the citizens of Dublin, Ben Dwyer’s work, Enclave, will be performed on the bandstand in the Green at lunchtime on Wednesday, 27 July. Scored for large ensemble including voices, it will be performed by Vox21 with conductor David Brophy and aims to celebrate all that these well-loved city centre gardens have meant to the people of Dublin since they were first opened. A Per Cent for Art commission through the Office of Public Works, the commissioning process has been facilitated by the Contemporary Music Centre. Dwyer’s work will form the centrepiece of a varied hour-long programme which will include lighthearted music and jazz as well as poetry readings. It will be compered by Denis Costello of RTE LyricFM, which will broadcast from the Green on the day. A range of children’s activities will also take place, and other celebratory events are planned every day from 20 July to 1 August. Posted: 7 June 2005
