Barry at English National Opera

photo from Barry opera

Gerald Barry’s new opera opens in London on 16 September.

English National Opera will give seven performances of The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant between 16 September and 7 October. A concert performance of the work was given in the National Concert Hall in Dublin last May, but this is its staged premiere.

With an all-female cast the opera, which was co-commissioned by ENO and RTÉ, is based on the play of the same name by Rainer Werner Fassbinder and is directed by Richard Jones.

A special afternoon on the work will be held at the London Coliseum on Saturday 1 October from 2.00 - 5.00 pm. The event will introduce the opera, its sources and context and will include a talk by David Barnett on Fassbinder and Germany in the 1970's, an interview with Gerald Barry and a chance to find out more about the production, and see the model box.

For performance details, visit the Calendar.
Further information and booking from the ENO Box Office, +44-(0)-207 632 830.
