Walshe at the Sculpture Factory
As a result of a CMC initiative, composer Jennifer Walshe has been working in the National Sculpture Factory in Cork throughout 2004. A series of workshops with artists and students interested in engaging with sound and music has culminated in a presentation of performance- and object-based sound works at the Cork Vision Centre in which both original and existing works were created by Jenny and the participating artists. The National Sculpture Factory’s programme for 2004 has a focus on site/live art and performance, in keeping with Cork’s growing reputation as an active centre for sound art. The key component of Walshe’s engagement with it is a commission to devise a piece of music in response to and using the sounds and facilities of the Factory space itself. It will be presented within that space on 5 November together with other performance-based works by the artists who have worked with Walshe throughout the year. The event is a prelude to an NSF symposium entitled Synergies and Signatures: collaboration, chaos and interdisciplinary arts practice which takes place the following day, Saturday 6 November. For Cork’s year as Capital of Culture in 2005, funding has been secured to enable curators Danny McCarthy and David Toop, facilitated by the NSF, to put together a site-based sound project, Sound Out, which will involve up to six major international sound artists coming to Cork to develop new works for placement in outdoor sites in the city.
