Irish Composers Grace Portuguese Airwaves Portuguese Classical Radio RDP / Antena 2 is to broadcast two programs of Irish contemporary music. The shows are a direct result of a CMC project promoting the work of Irish composers through CDs funded jointly by CMC and IMRO. The two episodes of Geografia dos Sons (The Sounds' Geography) featuring Irish composers will be broadcast on 29 July at 11.00am and 4 August at 8.00pm. The second episode will be repeated on 12 August at 11.00am. The programs feature music from Irish composers including Aloys Fleischmann, Frederick May, Brian Boydell, John Kinsella, Gerald Barry, John Buckley, Frank Corcoran and Kevin Volans. Geografia dos Sons is a series exploring how the geography of a nation affects its native musical traditions. Previous programs have featured the music of Australia, Belgium, Canada, Estonia, Finland, Holland, Hungary, South Korea, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Poland, China and Hong Kong. Future editions, to be broadcast in August and September, will cover the music of Lithuania and Denmark. Geografia dos Sons is written and presented by the Portuguese composer and broadcaster Luis Tonoco. Born in Lisbon in 1969, Tonoco studied at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa before being awarded scholarships to the Centro Nacional de Cultura and London's Royal Academy of Music. Tinoco's future projects include a series of new works to be premièred by The Apollo Saxophone Quartet (UK, December 2004); The Birmingham Contemporary Music Group (POR, Feb. 2005); The Albany Symphony (US, Feb. 2005); and the Porto National Orchestra (POR, Spring 2005).
