O’Connell’s Apollo
The Crash Ensemble is to give the world premiere of Kevin O'Connell's new cantata, Apollo and Marsyas. The work was inspired by the barbaric music competition between the heavenly Apollo (sung by soprano Sylvia O'Brien) and the earthly Marsyas (sung by baritone Martin Higgins). O’Connell’s work ends in a gruesome flaying of the losing competitor. The concert marks the Crash Ensemble's return from a critically acclaimed tour of Estonia, and features three works by Estonian composers: Architectonics III by Erkki-Sven Tüür, cendres by Helena Tulve, and Illumion for solo cello and electronics by Kairi Kosk. The performance will open with a performance of Steve Reich's Piano Phase. The Crash Ensemble will appear at the O'Reilly Theatre, Belvedere College, Dublin, at 8.00 pm on June 12th. Tickets are available from the Central Ticket Bureau.
