Music Festival in Kerry
The story of the Viking Invasion and the music of composer Rachel Holstead will feature in the Seventh International Festival of Classical Chamber and Traditional Music in Kerry next September. The organization behind the festival, Chamber Music in Retreat Lodges under its artistic director, Juliet Jopling, has commissioned Holstead, a native of Kerry, to reveal how Scandinavian musical traditions have influenced Irish music, and to bring the union of cultures into a contemporary context. The musicians performing at the festival include the Quince Quartet, who have already appeared on CMRL's programmes to great acclaim, the Midnight Sun Trio from Norway, and traditional musicians from County Kerry including Aoife Granville and Áine Uí Laoithe. The programme also includes concerts by traditional Scandinavian and Irish musicians, classical chamber programmes including Scandinavian masterpieces, and the whole Festival Ensemble will join together for performances of Holstead's new work. Creative workshops will be given in schools throughout Kerry in conjunction with the Kerry Education Service, introducing the musicians and their instruments and using the story of the Viking Invasion to create new works for performance in festival concerts. Throughout the festival, which takes place from 7 – 17 September 2004, Retreat Lodges will be open to the public.
