Dead but not buried! Morse code comes alive again in enCODEd, a collaborative multimedia project of the Context Gallery, Derry, and the Contemporary Music Centre.

From the Titanic to the capture of Doctor Crippen, Morse code holds an enduring place in the public imagination and a great significance to this island nation.

In EnCODEd, visual artist Brian Fay and composer Donal Siggins employ large-scale drawings and a sound installation to enable Morse code to be seen and heard once again and this time in a whole new way.

EnCODEd opened in the Context Gallery, Derry, on 11 December and ran until 8 January 2005. The exhibition is on show in Project Arts Centre, Dublin, from 21 to 26 February 2005. It opens in the West Cork Arts Centre, Skibbereen, on 18 June for one month.

EnCODEd originated out of a call for collaborative projects in 2002 by the Context Gallery, Derry and the Contemporary Music Centre, Ireland (CMC).

"It is an exciting new departure for the Contemporary Music Centre to engage in interdisciplinary work in such a direct way," says Karen Hennessy, Promotion Manager, CMC. "It has been a pleasure to work with the Context Gallery on this sound and vision project and we look forward to future collaborations of this kind."

Morse code was originally developed in 1844 by the American fine art painter Samuel F. B. Morse and in February 1999 was officially declared a dead language.
