Molly Bloom Says No!
A dramatic recital showing a different side to Joyce’s heroine, Molly Bloom, takes place in Dublin’s Hugh Lane Gallery on Sunday, 6 June. On stage rather than in bed, freed from the prison of the male text, Molly Bloom explores the side we do not see in Ulysses. Not the sensual, semi-mythical earth mother, but Molly the serious artist, the professional singer, the foreigner, the immigrant, the complex modern woman and singer. In a recital of operatic highlights from Carmen and Norma, with Sephardic and Spanish ballads, and set in the context of a dramatic text written by poet Michael O'Loughlin, the real Molly is revealed by soprano Judith Mok and pianist Dearbhla Collins. Presented as part of the ReJoyce Dublin 2004 festival by the Contemporary Music Centre, the Association of Irish Composers and Temple Bar Outdoors: Diversions Festival, the performance takes place at 12.00 and admission is free.
