The September-October 2004 issue of the Journal of Music in Ireland (JMI) contains a range of articles relating to contemporary music. These include reviews of new music by Seóirse Bodley and Ian Wilson and performances by the Crash Ensemble and Concorde; and a review by Benjamin Dwyer of a new book on the twentieth-century Irish composer Brian Boydell. The issue also features a tête-a-tête between Raymond Deane and Desmond Fennell which follows on from Deane's article, 'Must Music be Accessible?', published in the last issue of JMI. ‘What was Modernism?’ is a major new article by composer and pianist Patrick Zuk on the ideas of Schoenberg; and, in light of the Arts Council embarking on a consultation process in order to replace the Arts Plan 2002-2006, composer Roger Doyle offers his suggestions for improving and expanding current structures for new music.
