Irish Composition Summer School The annual Irish summer school for young composers takes place in NUI Maynooth in August. This year’s course, which takes place from 2 – 13 August and is open to students from Ireland and abroad, offers an extensive range of lectures and presentations on all aspects of contemporary composition. Workshops will be offered on extended violin techniques and contemporary keyboard textures, and students will have the opportunity to write for violin, piano or organ solo, or violin in combination with piano/organ. The extensive studio facilities of the NUI Maynooth music department will also be available for electro-acoustic composition at all levels. Tutors include composers Martin O’Leary, Kevin O’Connell, Michael Finnissy and Gráinne Mulvey, with the electro-acoustic area covered by Ian Brabazon and Victor Lazzarini. Elaine Clarke (violin) and David Adams (keyboards) are the performers, and the administrators are John McLachlan and Helen Haughey. The event is supported by the Arts Council and IMRO, and the closing date for applications is 4 June 2004. Details: Dr Helen Haughey, email helenhaughey@eircom.net or tel. +353-1-496 1484.
