‘DEAF’ Forum Discusses Electronic Music
An Open Forum on the many forms of electronic music takes place in CMC on 24 October, as part of this year’s Dublin Electronic Arts Festival (DEAF). Chaired by the doyen of electro-acoustic composers in Ireland, Roger Doyle, the panel features composers/sound artists Dennis McNulty, Fergal Dowling, Roy Carroll and Shane O’Shea. The forum aims to explore the different ways and/or common ground used by each of the many genres of electronic music. Each composer will talk about his own style, format and production methods, and the discussion will be open to active participation from the floor. The DEAF 3’04 festival takes place from 19 to 25 October in Dublin. It originated because of the organisers’ awareness that throughout Europe and elsewhere, electronic music festivals have proved successful in encouraging what might be described as a ‘digital DIY ethic’, and have attracted new opportunities for artists and promoters. In this spirit, the year 2001 saw the establishment of the Dublin Electronic Arts Festival (DEAF), Ireland's first attempt to place its own burgeoning electronic music and digital arts scene within an international context. DEAF's dual aim is to host an annual event which will help advance awareness within the wider public field of the diverse forms of electronic music and art currently being produced, and to provide a framework within which selected artists, producers and musicians are given an opportunity to present their work to an international audience. The organisers feel it is imperative to use this event as a platform to provide the public with an opportunity to appreciate the work of artists that might otherwise be sidelined by commercial constraints. Hence they are committed to the annual programming of an event of the highest artistic integrity. The CMC/DEAF Open Forum on Electronic Music takes place in the Contemporary Music Centre, 19 Fishamble Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 8, on Sunday 24 October from 4.00 pm to 6.00 pm. Admission is free.
