Crash in Estonia
Crash Ensemble makes its eighth international appearance at the 25th Estonian Music Days from 15-17 April. Supported by the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism for Ireland’s current Presidency of the European Union, this event brings Crash into a new area of performance and adds a new dimension to the ensemble's repertoire. Despite Estonia's comparatively small size, the country plays host to an outstandingly rich contemporary music culture. The austere but rhythmically engaging sounds of Erkki-Sven Tüür and Tiovo Tulev form a central part of the Crash programme while the much acclaimed and award-winning young composer Helena Tulve is also featured. 1000 Bars by Kevin Volans -- specially written for Crash Ensemble, as well as Streetwalker by Crash’s artistic director, Donnacha Dennehy, will make up the Irish side of the programme, as well as another Crash favourite: Cheating, Lying, Stealing by New York's David Lang (from Bang on a Can). Since its foundation in 1997, Crash Ensemble has tirelessly championed a new repertoire of music for Irish audiences as well as carving out new ways of presenting concerts, often encompassing lighting, video, dance and theatrical elements. Crash repertoire has included major international figures as well as the fostering a new generation of Irish composers who embrace music in a broad context, often mixing it with electronics and other art forms. The Estonian performances are part of Estonian Music Days, the major festival for contemporary music in the country. Crash takes its programme to three venues in Tallin, Tartu and Viljandi.
