Concorde Premieres First Absolute Execution

Ailis Ní Ríain
Ailís Ní Ríain

Leading Irish chamber ensemble, Concorde, premieres a new work by Ailís Ní Ríain on 13 June.

Due to renovations taking place at Dublin City Gallery, the Hugh Lane, this Sundays at Noon concert has been transferred to the Bank of Ireland Arts Centre in Foster Place, Dublin 2.

The programme was to feature the duo of Gareth Davis, bass clarinettist, and Elsbeth Moser, accordionist, but personal circumstances have prevented Elsbeth Moser from travelling and the premiere of Tomi Raisanen's Duo Concertante has been deferred.

However, Gareth Davis will be the featured guest and brings with him a number of stunning solos for bass clarinet: Sciarrino's Let me die before I wake..., the bass clarinet version of which was specially written for Gareth two years ago, and Joji Yuasa's spacious and atmospheric Solitude. Members of Concorde join Gareth to perform the Dublin premiere of Ailis Ní Ríain's duo, First Absolute Execution, and Magnus Lindberg's virtuoso piece for clarinets and drums, Ablauf. German composer Konrad Boehmer, resident in Amsterdam as is Gareth Davis, will be represented by a recent setting of Rimbaud's poetry for voice, clarinet, violin and accordion.

Bass clarinettist Gareth Davis studied with Antony Pay and Roger Heaton in London and then with Harry Sparnaay in Amsterdam. Since his debut at the age of 18 at London’s Wigmore Hall, Gareth has gone on to play throughout Europe, North America and Asia. He has played under conductors including Riccardo Chailly, Sir Simon Rattle, Diego Masson, Gregory Rose and Roger Norington, with orchestras and ensembles including the Philarmonia, Asko, Sinfonietta, Nieuw Ensemble, Netherlands Radio Orchestra and Sinfonia 21.. Gareth has been strongly involved in new music, having had pieces written for him by many composers including Salvatore Sciarrino, Helmut Lachenmann, Toshio Hosokawa, Gavin Bryars and Misato Mochizuki. He has worked extensively with the Hilliard Ensemble’s countertenor David James, soprano Sarah Leonard, Jane Chapman, Heinz Holliger, Sine Nomine, Stefano Scodanibio, the Rossetti Quartet and the bayan player Elsbeth Moser.
