Composers’ Choice at the National Concert Hall
The contemporary music series, Composers’ Choice, now in its fifth year, will be showcased at the National Concert Hall from 4-8 April 2004. Celebrating the new music of Irish and international composers, the series features the work of Eric Sweeney, Brian Irvine, John McLachlan, Kevin Volans and Marian Ingoldsby. Composers’ Choice dedicates one concert to each composer, focusing on his/her own works and influences. Each programme -- devised by the composers themselves -- displays an eclectic mix of contemporary music and standard chamber repertoire from Bach to Britten, Messiaen to Mompou and Stravinsky to Sweeney. The series, sponsored by IMRO, RTÉ Lyric FM and The Sunday Tribune, will showcase world premieres specially commissioned by the National Concert Hall from Brian Irvine, John McLachlan and Marian Ingoldsby. Audiences can avail of a pre-concert talk which provides the ideal opportunity to get an insight into the featured composer, their choice of programme and the performers involved. Composers’ Choice aims to increase the awareness and vitality of contemporary music in Ireland through performance. Director of the National Concert Hall, Judith Woodworth, comments ‘This series offers a fascinating insight into the art of composition and performance of contemporary music by some of the most established as well as emerging talents in Ireland today. We are pleased also to announce the winner of the “Commission Opportunity for Young Composers” competition during the festival. The successful candidate’s composition will be performed at the National Concert Hall next season’. A host of well known and less familiar musicians and performing groups will perform during the festival, from The Lassus Scholars to The Brian Irvine Ensemble, the Antipodes String Quartet to pianist Fredrik Ullén and Jonny Axelsson, percussion.
