Music for Galway launches its 23rd concert season on 15 September. Running from September to May 2004, the series of musical events will include seven concerts with music by living composers. CMC’s ‘Meet the Composer’ scheme will enable Deirdre Gribbin to introduce her quintet, Speaker’s Corner, which was premiered at the West Cork Chamber Music Festival by the RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet and Joanna MacGregor. The same artists will bring this work on tour and play in Galway on 3 October. John Maxwell Geddes from Scotland will introduce three works which he wrote for the young brass ensemble from the UK, The Golden Section, on 15 October. Another British composer, Alec Roth, is featured in a recital by the Galway ensemble-in-residence, ConTempo String Quartet. His Klee Pictures was written for the ConTempo Quartet in 2001. Kevin O’Connell’s North, a BBC Commission in 1989, is featured in the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra’s concert in Galway on 25 November. In the new year, Music for Galway has commissioned Ailís Ní Ríain to write a duo for bass clarinetist Gareth Davis and accordion player Elsbeth Moser. The duo will present a contemporary programme at Galway Arts Centre in February and Ailís will introduce the new work to Galway audiences. In March the music of Thomas Adès is included in the RTÉ NSO concert and in April ConTempo string quartet play Jane O’Leary’s Mystic Play of Shadows from 1995.
