dB Ensemble
The dB Ensemble directed by composer Ed Bennett will perform as part of the Bang 03 festival of new music on 25 September in Bangor, Northern Ireland. Based in the music department of North Down and Ards Institute, the festival runs for three days and features international artists in the fields of contemporary, electronic and improvised music and arts. The dB ensemble will be performing several works by Bennett (including a first performance) as well as pieces by Jeremy Woodruff (USA), Fumiko Miyachi (Japan) and Brian Robinson (Northern Ireland). Featuring the unique voice of Steve Halfyard in her fourth visit to Ireland as a performer, and other regular Bennett collaborators, Roman Mints (violin), Evelyn Chang (piano) and New York composer/improviser Jeremy Woodruff (winds), the group mixes composed pieces written especially for them with electronic improvisations and live video mixing provided by the German video artist Daniel Kluge. The lineup is completed by electronic composer/performer Brian Robinson and Bennett himself on electronics. The group last performed together at the Linen Hall Library in Belfast to a packed and enthusiastic audience. ‘Bennett and Halfyard produce a simultaneously mystifying and engrossing sound of crackling electronics, bursts of noise and washes of harmony over which floats the singular voice of Steve Halfyard pushing and prodding the music into new environments. Think of Berio's work with Cathy Berberian colliding with modern electronic music and you're getting closer...’ Further information from Moving On Music, Belfast.
