Crash Festival 2003 Composer Michael Gordon, pianist Lisa Moore and double bassist Robert Black, all from New York's Bang on a Can, head the bill in Crash Ensemble's 2003 Festival at Project Arts Centre, Dublin from 3 - 6 December. The festival will also feature Crash Ensemble performing the premiere of Gordon's 2003 version of his 60-minute multi-media work, Van Gogh, in the presence of the composer. In the same programme are a revival of Crash's own multi-media hit, Junk Box Fraud by Donnacha Dennehy as well as the world premiere of I like things by Andrew Hamilton. The packed programme of activities features many of today's most compelling works from Ireland, the USA and Canada. Lisa Moore performs a programme of Frederic Rzewski, one of America's most unique voices whose compositions have reflected many controversial political issues. Moore's Dublin programme includes De Profundis, Rzewski's emotionally-powerful melodramatic oratorio for speaking pianist inspired by the writings of Oscar Wilde while in Reading Gaol. Robert Black's solo contribution is the 70-minute minimalist marathon and masterwork, Opus 17A by Hanne Darboven, who is a celebrated visual artist as well as composer. One of Canada's most renowned contemporary music ensembles, Bradyworks, with artistic director Tim Brady also makes a welcome appearance at the festival, performing Canadian works and premieres of works by Irish composers Judith Ring and John Godfrey. The Callino Quartet brings a programme of Philip Glass and Steve Reich including two of Reich's all time masterpieces, Different Trains and the Triple Quartet. The newly formed dB Ensemble with artistic director Ed Bennett perform a programme of their works and Northern Irish composers are also featured in a solo recital by pianist/composer Simon Mawhinney. The creative team behind the recently acclaimed and award-winning opera, Thwaite, Jürgen Simpson and Simon Doyle, collaborate once again on a new composition, Six, for video, percussion and electronics. The artistic line-up is completed by a film showing of Decasia by Bill Morrison, with a powerful symphonic score by Michael Gordon, a late night electronica event from Double Adaptor and a concert of Irish and world premieres with the unmistakable title of Maternity Hospital! In association with the Arts Council's Critical Voices programme, Michael Gordon, Lisa Moore and Robert Black take part in discussions that traverse the many-faceted aspects of contemporary music composition, performance and appreciation.
