Concorde Premieres Canning
The contemporary music ensemble Concorde presents the premiere of a new work, Dolly is Dead, by Rob Canning, on Sunday, 5 October 2003. Commissioned with funds from the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon, the concert takes place at the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery of Modern Art in Dublin. Rob Canning is based in County Wexford and has previously collaborated with Concorde on a number of ensemble pieces. The new work uses instrumentalists performing live and interacting with pre-recorded and electronically manipulated sounds from their instruments. It will make creative use of the performing space and surround the audience with sound. Also on the programme is Jane O'Leary's sextet, Reflections II, which was premiered at the Up North! festival in Dublin in December 2002. O’Leary, artistic director of Concorde, composed the work for Concorde. In four short movements, it creates immediate images and moods and mixes a range of instrumental colours from piccolo to bass clarinet. The final work on the programme is by Fumiko Myachi, a young Japanese composer studying in London. Myachi will join the other two composers in Dublin to introduce her work, Myojo (Morning Star) for voice, violin, piano and tape. The concert is repeated in the Mermaid Arts Centre, Bray, Co. Wicklow, on Tuesday, 7 October. For details check the Calendar.
