ICO performs Agnew's The Moon

Elaine Agnew
Elaine Agnew

The Irish Chamber Orchestra performs Elaine Agnew's The Moon under the direction of leader Katherine Hunka on tour in Ireland during April. Based on W. B. Yeats's poem, The Song of Wandering Aengus, the piece was commissioned by the Irish Chamber Orchestra and premièred at the Killaloe Music Festival in July 2002. The Moon stands on its own or can be performed as part of a larger multi-movement work entitled Impressions of the Song of Wandering Aengus to which Irish composers Raymond Deane, Fergus Johnston, Jennifer Walshe and Ian Wilson also made contributions. The work takes a similar approach to Sellinger's Round for string orchestra, a set of variations on an Elizabethan theme commissioned by Benjamin Britten for the Aldeburgh Festival in 1953.
